Samtrackz — A new flavor of smooth Coffee

Could you please give us some important details from your past? How did you get to where you are today?

My friends Dad taught me how to make beats on his ASR-10 back when I was 16 — so needless to say I was at his house like everyday until I bought my own. Linked up with some friends around 18 or so and got more into the lyrical side of things and ended up having a pretty good run in Oakland ( Bay Area ) in the Gospel Rap scene. During that time, I ended collaborating with some friends who were singers and put on a few Robert Glasper type concerts- they wrote the songs, I made the beats. As time went on, I got married had kids, started a business, so my life experience began to change; which meant my musical content had to change. This is where my latest record “Coffee” comes in. It’s not the typical young trap that’s on the radio, it’s unapologetically for the grown and sexy — and I’m at the point musically where I’m ok with that.

What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

I could name a million individual challenges, but the main hurdle to overcome has been, not believing in myself. As music style started to change, it was hard for me to adapt initially. I was falling into the comparison trap and trying to sound like “them.” At one point, I just stopped altogether, which was a real low point, because the desire never left — but disbelief was winning the battle. Thankfully, I have good folks in my corner who are able to see past my excuses and encourage me to be who I’m supposed to be. Little by little, I began back into more and more, but this time with the mindset to learn and improve, instead of thinking I knew it all, and always having something to prove.

I can definitely understand! Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

I love all the aspects of the music making process. I specialize in being able to get artist beyond what they think their limits are, and I can hear things that most others don’t. The singer (Michael Williams) on the hook for “Coffee” said he’s never heard his voice sound so good. I knew what his voice could do beyond what he thought possible and was able to pull that amazing sound out of him. And being able to package all this into a record that’s real vibe and feels good, is what I’d want to be known for — the way the song makes a listener feel.

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

Success, however you choose to define it, is only found on the other side of fear. This doesn’t mean you have to dismiss the fear or act like it doesn’t exist. Acknowledge it and walk in it — fear can never be overcome standing still.

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

Success for me is being able to make good music that I’m proud of and that my listeners enjoy vibing to. I don’t need millions of anything — fans or dollars — give me a solid fanbase and enough money to provide me and family options in life, good health — and I’ll call that success all day long.

What’s next for you?

I’ve got more music on the way that I’m excited about. I recently moved to ATL from Oakland, and am making some really good connections musically, that will help to allow me to put out the best music possible. There are also some really dope collabs coming up, as well as some really engaging video content and concert material.
